Figeac sits beside the river Célé, which is a tributary of the River Lot: The most spectacular sections of the River Lot including the village of St Cirq La Popie perched high above the river gorge are within easy distance, as is the cliff village of Rocamadour and the Gouffre de Padirac and other cave systems that are open in the area. Pictured is the giant replica of the Rosetta Stone, the key to unlocking the translation of Egyptian hieroglyphics writing which is on the 'Place des Escrtitures' in Figeac: Jean-Francois Champollion who made the links was born in Figeac.
