Project initiated by the Marquis de Louvois, the minister of war, its implementation is entrusted to the engineer Francis Ferry. On the death of Louvois, Vauban reduces ambition, and limits the construction part of the oval proposed to give it its final shape of a horseshoe.
The fort was built in the eighteenth century to keep pace with advances in weaponry, including reducing the number of doorways to ten of the sixteen originally built, and takes its final form.
Armed with guns and howitzers of the nineteenth century, it retains a garrison and military potential.
Severely bombed during World War II during the liberation of Marennes September 10, 1944, it acquired the headquarters of Lands by the municipality of Bourcefranc-le-Chapus and is fully restored under the direction of the DRAC year 1960.
Historical monument in 1929, it houses a museum since 1972 oyster and a permanent exhibition on the history of the fort, including models made up of coastal fortifications Charente.
