Since its construction, the faithful gathered around the castle frequented. But in the early sixteenth century, Count Odet d'Aydie and his wife Anne de Pons signed the founding charter of a college. Flood victims in the lower town, the Benedictine priory Chalard took up residence there. They were especially charged to pray for the repose of the souls of the founders buried in the side chapel south.
In 1568, during the Wars of Religion, Huguenot troops to set fire to Assiel. The thickness of the walls of the apse and the base of the tower were vigorously resisted and kept but new construction perverted this set.
During the Revolution, to prepare ammunition, "friends of liberty and equality" decided to remove the coffins of lead Aydie families. The Notre Dame was a Catholic church in the early nineteenth century after a major facelift.

Now beautifully restored, it hosts the summer exhibitions of contemporary art and formations invited by the Cultural Center of Ribérac. Just reward for the former chapel of the castle (built around 1000 and destroyed during the Revolution).

The Notre Dame is undoubtedly the oldest monument in Ribérac, witnessed the heyday of the History of the City.
