In the early twelfth century, Vaison is part of the marquisate of Provence which depends on the count of Toulouse. It faces the bishop, one lord and master of the city since 1108, about their possessions. To assert its power, Raymond VI erected a tower of wood, then in 1195 in stone. The castle consists of three main buildings, flanked by a square tower, surrounding a courtyard. The alterations and additions (brattice, watch tower, barbican) dates from the fifteenth century. They confirm the military function of the castle, which is a monitoring station more than a stately home.
