In 1020 the castle of Saint-Maurice, like all of the eleventh century is made of wood, built on a hill and surrounded by a palisade of wood also. It lies on a strategic crossing point, the Loire Valley and is part of a defense system with other castles or fortified towns. When in 1221 Guy de Forez IV took possession of Saint-Maurice, the fortress was already dominated by its big stone tower.
