It is not known the location of the original enclosure. JL Sarrazin does not exclude that it was built in the eleventh century, along with the Chaize-le-Vicomte and Tiffauges, on the initiative of the Viscount of Thouars, whose power extended over the whole northern current Vendée.

Every year the Friends of Old Castle Commequiers organizes various events including medival. This festival takes place over two days in period costume.
