The castle of the counts of Angoulême, including diifférentes elevated structure between XIIII and fifteenth centuries, was well preserved until the mid-nineteenth century. Today, location is occupied by City Hall, flanked by two ancient towers of the castle.
One is shaped polygon irréguliier. Of the nine sections that comprise the two largest are on the outside to the enclosure, a very prominent corner, reinforcing the masonry, as in an "oven spur." This side of the castle, in effect, merged with the fortifications of the city on the edge of the plateau as accessible to the enemy. All other sections approaches a semicircle.
This tower contains a parlor and three floors, the vaults are ribbed or domed. It was built in the late thirteenth century. The other tower, less ancient, was raised in the second half of the fifteenth century. Circular and beautifully paired, it is divided into two floors above the ground floor. The ground floor and first floor ceilings are covered, the second floor retains a ribbed vault. Meet the ribs, are the keys and different patterns of sculpture. The key is decorated with a central crest Orleans party and Milan. The keys are the removal of weapons of Orleans and Savoy.
The buildings of the Town Hall include the Archaeological Museum, which houses many artifacts from the Roman period and Middle Ages, including the beautiful funerary statue of the Chevalier de Chambes, who died in 1256, which comes from the church of Vilhonneur.
