Cathédrale de Maguelone

Maguelone Cathedral is located near the sea, 4km from Palavas on an ancient volcanic island. The monument stands at the heart of an island of trees and vines, among the ponds.

The cathedral has been built there eight centuries as a fortress. Thus, the walls commonly exceed 2 meters thick. The towers are towering and narrow openings. This masterpiece of architecture is a perfect example of Romanesque art.

On the facade of the cathedral, various biblical scenes are depicted as a vision of the Apocalypse. Inside, note the sarcophagi and recumbent. A stone stairway leads upstairs, where a tombstone dedicated to Bishop John of Montlaur serves as altar table. Excavation campaigns have to update on this ancient island from Roman, Etruscan, and many Visigothic sarcophagi. The foundations of a church destroyed in the 7th century were also updated.

Maguelone is now synonymous with wine. Indeed, the association "the companions of Maguelone" rehabilitates this rich heritage for decades.
Finally, a classical music festival is held annually in June in the Cathedral.
