The Vosges massif is a low mountain range with altitudes of up to more than 1,400 meters. A beautiful nature reserve with forests, valleys, rivers, steep mountain walls and high plains. It is a sparsely populated region with a lot of natural beauty, peace and space, an ideal region for active and sporting holidays. We find soft rounded shapes (the Chaumes) which characterize the landscape, with valleys, pine forests and lakes on the (left) slope of the Vosges and a steep descent on the right; Alsace with many vineyards on the sunny slopes.
The Route des Crêtes is well known: a beautiful route on the highest mountain ridges, north-south, on the border with Alsace, with beautiful views along the way, sometimes as far as the Alps.
The whole Vosges landscape passes during this route: the balloons, the summits, the various lakes such as the Lac Blanc, the Lac des Trouts and the stubble fields, the mountain pastures.
In winter, the Route des Crêtes is largely closed and accessible only to hikers, cross-country skiers and skiers.
Some high summits: the Grand Ballon 1424 m, the Hohneck 1362 m, the Champ du Feu 1100 m.
Lorraine has 3 nature reserves: Lorraine Regional Park, Northern Vosges Natural Park and Ballons des Vosges Natural Park.
The Hautes Vosges are of great diversity: gentian, digitalis, daffodils, ferns, heather, mushrooms, blackberries and raspberries and of course blueberries (the Brimbelles); as well as the fauna with many roe deer, red deer, chamois, wild boar and many species of birds such as the Capercaillie (black grouse), the buzzard and the tawny owl.
